On July 9, former Supreme Council member of the People Power Party (PPP), Jang Ye-chan, raised allegations against Han Dong-hoon, a candidate for party leadership, suggesting that Han had a team to generate favorable online opinions since his tenure as the Minister of Justice.
In an interview with MBC Radio, Jang stated, "Han Dong-hoon had a team dedicated to managing and creating favorable online opinions for him since his time as Minister of Justice." He emphasized that this "comment team" operated outside the Ministry of Justice and asserted, "I'm only sharing what I have directly seen, heard, and experienced. I am not sure how much Han was directly aware of this, but there was definitely a team."
These allegations surfaced amidst controversy over a text message from First Lady Kim Keon-hee involving the term "comment team." In a message sent on January 23 to Han, who was then the emergency committee chairman of the PPP, Kim stated, "I was shocked and devastated to hear rumors that I was using a comment team to slander you and those around you."
As debates continue over the existence and role of this "comment team," Jang clarified that during Han's tenure, there were suspicions from his side about the presence of artificial comment teams responding sensitively to online criticisms. "I understand that Han's side was very sensitive to online criticism and suspected the presence of an artificial comment team rather than natural criticism," Jang noted.
On the other hand, pro-Han Dong-hoon faction member Jang Dong-hyuk, another PPP Supreme Council candidate, countered these claims on the same broadcast. He stated, "Han never discussed with me about any 'comment team' activities or raised concerns about certain comments."
The issue continues to fuel discussions within the political sphere, reflecting the ongoing tensions and divisions among factions within the People Power Party.
