Recently, interest in artificial intelligence (AI) startups has surged, leading to the release of a report on which countries are most favorable for AI startup businesses.
AIPRM, an AI platform company, ranked 14 countries for their suitability for AI startups, with South Korea coming in at 13th. Let's explore the reasons behind this ranking in detail.
Ranking of Countries Favorable for AI Startups
According to AIPRM's recent report, the top three countries for AI startups are the United States in 1st place, China in 2nd, and Singapore in 3rd. South Korea has 189 AI startups and a total investment of approximately $4.81 billion, placing it in 10th position.
This report evaluated the number of AI startups over the past decade, total private investment, research and development (R&D), revenue growth, and hiring numbers to create the rankings. The data utilized in this research was sourced from Stanford University's AI reports and studies from Deloitte.
Performance by Country
The United States attracted funding for 5,509 AI startups over the past decade, which is greater than the combined total of 4,791 startups from the other 13 countries. China has 1,446 startups, showing a dominant presence, but many of these businesses do not survive. As of the first half of this year, more than 237,000 AI-related companies have been established in China, yet over 10% of them quickly disappeared.
South Korea achieved 242% revenue growth, ranking 9th, while Germany leads with 1,160% growth and Sweden follows with 127% growth.
Current Status and Future Challenges for South Korean AI Startups
While South Korea is positioned competitively in terms of startup numbers and investment attraction, there are concerns about the overall business environment and growth rates on the global stage.
Christoph Semper, founder of AIPRM, stated, "The competition for AI startups is becoming increasingly intense, and the global market for generative AI is expected to grow by 30% to 40% each year."
The number of AI startups established globally last year increased by 40% compared to the previous year.
Conclusion: The Potential for AI Startup Growth in South Korea
To nurture AI startups, a better business environment and financial support are essential. While South Korea has a solid foundation for the development of AI technology, there needs to be more proactive policy support to leverage this potential effectively.
Moving forward, South Korea must strive to create an even more favorable environment for AI startup businesses.
