A second arrest warrant has been issued for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is accused of leading an insurrection during the "December 3 Illegal Martial Law" incident.
On January 7, the Joint Investigation Headquarters (JIH), comprising the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), police, and the Ministry of National Defense’s Investigation Bureau, announced that the Seoul Western District Court had approved the arrest and search warrants requested by the CIO the previous day.
Charges Against President Yoon
President Yoon is accused of several constitutional violations following the declaration of martial law on December 3:
- Blocking the National Assembly to prevent a resolution to lift the martial law.
- Operating an arrest task force targeting key political figures.
- Occupying the National Election Commission (NEC) and attempting to seize its servers.
These actions form the basis of the charges of insurrection leadership and abuse of authority filed against him.
First Arrest Attempt Fails
On December 31, the court approved the first arrest warrant for President Yoon. However, an attempt to execute the warrant on January 3 failed when the Presidential Security Service obstructed investigators at the President’s residence in Hannam-dong, Seoul.
After the warrant expired on January 6, the CIO submitted a new request to extend its validity.
Next Steps
The JIH is now reviewing the timing and strategy for a second attempt to execute the arrest, considering the high level of security surrounding the President.
