On July 20, 2024, the cryptocurrency market is eagerly anticipating the potential launch of the first Ethereum (ETH) spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. With Ethereum being the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization after Bitcoin (BTC), this development has generated significant excitement and speculation about its impact on ETH prices. This blog post explores the expectations surrounding the ETF's launch and its potential effects on Ethereum's price.

Anticipation of Ethereum ETF Launch

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is expected to approve the Ethereum spot ETF on July 22, with trading to commence on July 23. Major asset management firms, including BlackRock, VanEck, and Franklin Templeton, have received preliminary approvals for their ETFs. Currently, eight asset management firms are preparing for the launch, with the possibility of simultaneous releases if the remaining five firms submit their final documentation by July 21.

Market Reaction and Price Projections

With the potential ETF launch, analysts are predicting significant price movements for Ethereum. ETH has been trading in a range between 4 million KRW and 5.5 million KRW (approximately $3,470 to $4,765) for the past four months on domestic exchanges, with 5.5 million KRW representing its previous all-time high achieved during the 2021 bull market.

Asset management firm Bitwise forecasts that Ethereum's price could reach $5,000 (approximately 6.93 million KRW) following the ETF launch. Bitwise suggests that while immediate gains may be tempered by the outflow of funds from Grayscale's existing products, up to $15 billion could flow into the Ethereum market within 18 months, pushing prices to new highs.

Tair Capital offers an even more optimistic outlook, projecting Ethereum's price to hit $10,000 (approximately 13.8 million KRW) by the end of the year. They anticipate that the ETF approval will attract $5 billion to $10 billion in new capital in the short to medium term.

Market research firm Kaiko also supports this bullish sentiment, noting that a limited supply of Ethereum could lead to sharp price increases due to heightened institutional demand.

Cautious Perspectives

Despite the optimism, there are voices urging caution. Citibank predicts that the performance of the Ethereum spot ETF might fall short of expectations. They argue that investors might view Ethereum similarly to Bitcoin, leading to less capital inflow and a smaller impact on ETH prices.

Executives at the U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Kraken share this sentiment, estimating that monthly inflows into the Ethereum ETF might only reach $1 billion. BitMEX, another major exchange, believes that the impact of the Ethereum ETF will be less significant compared to Bitcoin's spot ETF, given that Bitcoin was first to market. They also emphasize that Ethereum's utility, technology, and focus on decentralized applications (dApps) make its connection to an ETF less direct.

Conclusion

The imminent decision on the Ethereum spot ETF has the potential to significantly influence the cryptocurrency market. While there are optimistic projections about Ethereum's price reaching new heights, there are also cautious voices highlighting potential limitations in the ETF's impact. As the market awaits the SEC's decision, the cryptocurrency community remains divided but hopeful about the future of Ethereum.

Summary

On July 20, 2024, anticipation is high for the potential launch of the first Ethereum spot ETF in the United States, expected to be approved on July 22 and begin trading on July 23. With Ethereum being the second-largest cryptocurrency, analysts predict significant price movements, though some caution that the ETF's impact might be less dramatic than expected.
