Recently, BLACKPINK member Jennie has been embroiled in controversy over allegations of indoor vaping, sparking significant discussion online.

Incident Overview

On July 8, a short video titled "Jennie's Indoor Smoking" began circulating widely on social media and various online communities. The video shows Jennie surrounded by staff members while getting her makeup and hair done, holding what appears to be an electronic cigarette. Notably, the video captures Jennie exhaling smoke after taking a puff from the device.

The video was reportedly taken during one of Jennie's overseas schedules, and the setting seems to be a waiting room. The scene was part of a vlog uploaded to Jennie's YouTube channel on July 2, but it has since been deleted.

The Heart of the Controversy

The primary issue that has sparked debate is Jennie blowing smoke towards the staff members. This action has elicited a wide range of responses from netizens. Some criticized her, saying, "Blowing smoke in someone's face is rude," "Can't she refrain from smoking for a brief moment during makeup?" and "The staff did nothing to deserve this." Conversely, others defended her, arguing, "If the staff themselves didn't complain, why should we care?" "Electronic cigarettes don't smell," and "The staff could be smokers themselves, and it might have been consensual. It's wrong to jump to conclusions."

Similar Cases

This isn't the first time a celebrity has faced backlash for indoor smoking. Actor Ji Chang-wook previously apologized after being caught vaping in front of colleagues during a rehearsal for JTBC's "Welcome to Samdalri." Similarly, EXO member D.O. was fined after being reported for smoking indoors at the waiting room of MBC's "Show! Music Core" last year.

Legal Perspective

According to the National Health Promotion Act, buildings with a floor area of 1,000㎡ or more, such as office buildings, are designated as non-smoking areas. Smoking in such areas can result in a fine of up to 100,000 won. However, the ban applies to cigarettes and e-cigarettes containing nicotine. Non-nicotine e-cigarettes are considered "tobacco-like products" and are not subject to fines. Whether Jennie's device contained nicotine or not could be a significant factor in this case.

Conclusion

This controversy surrounding Jennie's indoor vaping highlights the significant impact a celebrity's actions can have. Fans and the public have expressed diverse opinions, emphasizing the importance of responsibility and etiquette for public figures. With neither Jennie nor her agency having released an official statement yet, it remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved.
