Community Leaders Bow Heads in Remorse, Pledge Efforts to Prevent Future Tragedies

Miryang, South Korea

Two decades after a horrific sexual assault case involving a middle school girl, Miryang City officials and local community leaders have issued a public apology for their inaction and lack of response at the time. The incident, which occurred in 2004, saw a group of 44 high school boys repeatedly sexually assault a 14-year-old middle school student over the course of a year.

The renewed attention to the case stems from the recent online exposure of the perpetrators' identities, sparking public outrage and reigniting calls for justice for the victim.

In response, Miryang Mayor Ahn Byung-goo, along with city council members and representatives from local religious and civic groups, gathered at Miryang City Hall to express their deepest apologies to the victim and the nation.

"We failed to fulfill our responsibility to create a safe and just society," Mayor Ahn acknowledged in a joint apology statement. "Instead of addressing the issue head-on, we turned a blind eye to the tragedy due to selfish motives, prioritizing our own well-being over the victim's suffering."

The statement further highlighted the community's collective failure to recognize the victim's pain and heed her cries for help.

"We were insensitive to the immense pain the victim and her family endured, and we failed to listen to their voices," Mayor Ahn confessed. "We deeply regret our inaction and negligence."

Moving forward, Miryang City has pledged to work closely with the community to establish a safer environment, prevent future crimes, and provide comprehensive support for victims of sexual violence. "We are committed to rebuilding trust and creating a society where everyone feels safe and respected," Mayor Ahn emphasized.

The apology comes at a time when South Korea is grappling with a rising tide of sexual violence and a growing demand for accountability and societal change.

The Miryang case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of silence and inaction, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to address sexual assault and protect survivors.
