North Korea's Ballistic Missile Launch Failure
Early this morning, around 5:30 AM, North Korea launched a ballistic missile from near Pyongyang towards the East Sea. However, the missile flew approximately 250 km before exploding mid-air over the sea east of Wonsan. The missile's debris scattered over a wide area.
Our military believes that this missile might be a hypersonic ballistic missile using solid fuel. Earlier this year, North Korea claimed to have successfully tested a solid-fuel hypersonic missile. This recent launch could have been an attempt to further develop that missile.
What is a Hypersonic Missile?
A hypersonic missile travels at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound during its descent, making it very difficult to intercept with existing air defense systems. North Korea is focused on developing hypersonic missiles to potentially neutralize the South Korea-U.S. air defense network.
Recent Provocations by North Korea
In the past few weeks, North Korea has made several provocative moves. On May 30th, they launched missiles, and in recent days, they have sent balloons containing waste towards the South. Over two consecutive days, they released about 250 of these balloons, with around 100 landing in northern Gyeonggi Province and Seoul. This year alone, North Korea has sent such balloons six times.
