As Chuseok approaches, many families are preparing for the traditional ritual meals known as "Charye-sang." This year, a recent study has shed light on the cost differences between shopping at traditional markets and large supermarkets for Chuseok preparations. The findings reveal that traditional markets offer significant savings compared to their supermarket counterparts. A recent survey conducted by the Small Enterprise and Market Service (SEMS) between August 26 and 30 compared prices for 27 Chuseok ritual items at 37 traditional markets and 37 nearby large supermarkets. The results indicate that the cost of preparing a Charye-sang for four people is significantly lower at traditional markets, averaging 298,313 KRW compared to 371,097 KRW at large supermarkets. This represents a savings of 73,784 KRW, or 19.6%.
The price differences are particularly notable in certain categories:
- Vegetables: Traditional markets offer vegetables at 51.2% less than supermarkets.
- Seafood: Prices are 36.4% lower in traditional markets.
- Meat: Traditional markets offer meat at 21.1% less.
Among the 27 items surveyed, 22 were found to be cheaper at traditional markets. Items such as skinned doraji (67.1% cheaper), bracken (66.9%), pollock fillets (47.2%), spinach (45.0%), dates (43.4%), and bean sprouts (37.1%) showed significant price advantages.
However, there are exceptions where large supermarkets were cheaper, such as apples, pears, tofu, and flour.
Park Seong-hyo, Director of SEMS, highlighted that using mobile or card-type Onnuri gift certificates can further reduce costs. With a limit of 2 million KRW per person, these vouchers offer up to 10% savings on Chuseok preparations. Park encouraged families to take advantage of traditional markets to prepare a festive Chuseok meal affordably and enjoy a bountiful holiday.
