A survivor of the Japanese military “comfort women” has passed away, leaving only 8 survivors officially recognized by the government. These individuals bear a profound and painful history, having endured severe abuses by the Japanese military. Their survival and testimonies have played a crucial role in uncovering historical truths, and efforts to preserve their dignity and honor must continue.

On September 7, the Justice for Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Foundation (Jeongui-yeon) announced the passing of Ms. G, a Japanese military “comfort women” survivor. Ms. G was only 18 when she traveled to China with a friend to work in a sewing factory, only to be forcibly recruited as a “comfort woman” by the Japanese military. She could not return to Korea after the liberation in 1945 and only came back in the early 2000s, reuniting with her family. She actively participated in advocacy for the victims’ cause, including attending weekly protests and providing testimonies abroad.

The Justice for Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Foundation stated that, following the family's wishes, personal details of the victim would not be disclosed and the funeral would be held privately. Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Family, Shin Young-sook, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “We are left with only eight survivors, and it is our duty to ensure their remaining years are comfortable and to continue efforts to restore their honor and dignity.”

As of now, there are 240 registered Japanese military “comfort women” survivors, with 232 having passed away and 8 still living. The remaining survivors are all between 94 and 96 years old, with an average age of 95. They are located in Seoul, Daegu, Incheon, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam, with three living in Gyeonggi Province.

As the number of surviving Japanese military “comfort women” dwindles, it is our collective responsibility to ensure the remaining survivors have a peaceful and supported life. Remembering their suffering and continuing to uphold their rights and dignity remains a vital task for society. It is crucial that we honor their legacy and address this historical injustice.
