On September 11, South Korea's opposition parties pushed forward two significant special prosecutor bills (known as 특검법) through the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee (법제사법위원회), despite objections from the ruling party. The bills are aimed at investigating allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Keon-hee (김건희) and the death of Army Corporal Chae (채 상병).

  1. Kim Keon-hee Special Prosecutor Bill: This bill seeks to investigate eight major allegations involving Kim Keon-hee, including accusations of involvement in personnel appointments and election-related interference.
  2. Corporal Chae Special Prosecutor Bill: Focused on investigating the suspicious death of Corporal Chae, this bill proposes a special prosecutor, with candidates recommended by the Supreme Court Chief Justice. From those recommended, the opposition would choose two candidates for the final selection.

Despite the ruling party's objections and a standoff during committee discussions, the opposition successfully passed both bills in the committee. Efforts to mediate the disagreement, including the formation of a dispute coordination committee, did not result in a consensus.

The Democratic Party plans to bring both bills to a vote in tomorrow's plenary session (본회의). However, the decision to place the bills on the agenda lies with National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo, leaving the outcome uncertain.
