Warren Buffett, the renowned investor and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has revealed plans to leave almost all of his fortune to a public trust jointly managed by his three children. This decision, disclosed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on June 28, underscores Buffett's lifelong commitment to philanthropy and his desire to continue making a positive impact even after his passing.

A Legacy of Giving

Buffett, who is 93 years old, has already donated more than half of his Berkshire Hathaway shares, currently valued at approximately $130 billion (around 180 trillion KRW). His philanthropy is well-documented, having pledged in 2006 to donate a significant portion of his wealth to five foundations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world's largest charitable organizations focused on global health, poverty, and gender equality. Over the years, Buffett has contributed $39.3 billion (about 54 trillion KRW) to the Gates Foundation.

The Public Trust

According to Buffett's updated will, his remaining estate will be placed in a newly established public trust. This trust will be managed by his three children, who will have to unanimously agree on how to allocate the funds for charitable purposes. Buffett expressed complete confidence in his children's values and their ability to honor his philanthropic vision.

"I have a very, very good opinion of my children's values and trust them 100% on what they will do," Buffett said.

Continuing the Philanthropic Mission

While Buffett's children have not yet decided on the specific charitable causes they will support, they indicated a likelihood of continuing the work their father started. Susan Buffett mentioned, "We haven't talked about what we will do yet, but I imagine it will be a continuation of what we have been doing."

Howard Buffett added, "Someone has to be responsible for the money my father wants to give to charity, and it is an honor to be able to do that."

A Broader Perspective

Buffett's decision reflects his broader perspective on wealth and responsibility. He emphasized the importance of using his fortune to help those less fortunate. "There are 8 billion people in the world, and my children and I are among the luckiest 100 within the top 1%," Buffett said. "There are many ways to help people."

Conclusion

Warren Buffett's dedication to philanthropy is an inspiring legacy that highlights the power of wealth to effect positive change. His decision to entrust his fortune to his children for charitable purposes ensures that his commitment to helping others will continue, benefiting countless individuals around the world. Buffett's story is a testament to the impact that thoughtful and generous giving can have, and it sets a powerful example for future generations of philanthropists.
